In late August 2013 our youngest child Daire (2 1/2years) was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a life-long autoimmune disease that usually occurs in childhood but can be diagnosed at any age. Type 1 diabetes affects over 122,300 people in Australia alone.
To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must have a constant supply of insulin administered intraveneously through injections or an insulin pump and they test their blood sugar by pricking their fingers or toes at least four times a day. In Daires case, we check her blood sugar levels at least 7 times a day.
Many people ask us if Daire will grow out of it ? The answer is simply no.
Right now, this is a lifelong disease and as yet there is no known cure. Daire will need insulin for the rest of her life.
People with Type 1 diabetes may also face many serious long term health complications, which is why research into the disease is so important. So in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Type 1 Diabetes research (through the JDRF foundation ), we’ve decided to participate in 40 events in a year November 2013 – November 2014.
Also, as activities around a mid-life crisis goes, we thought this was a little different. Ronan also turns 40 in May so we’re basing his midlife crisis around these events. Some men buy a sports car, Ronan runs a marathon. Go figure.

Wow what an awesome challenge! Such a positive thing to do. Can only imagine how hard it must make daily life, with Daire’s diagnosis. But then she has the best family to love and support her.
